Prince Shotoku Character Sketch
1. Prince Shotoku was a remarkable leader because he supported Buddhism, which influenced him to build Buddhist temples in Japan. He also brought Buddhist priests to teach about the religion. Prince Shotoku wanted Japan to have a close relationship with China, so he sent Japanese leaders to China to learn about their culture, architecture, art, literature, science, mathematics, agriculture, and etiquette. He was also a remarkable leader because he kept power within the clans.
2. The 17-point constitution was a document that included moral standards and values that would influence Japanese rulers. He established a constitution because he believed it would strengthen the state. His 17-point constitution was based off of Confucian ideas, for example his constitution stated that the emperor was the most important person.
3. Confucianism influenced the 17-point constitution because Shotoku believed in Confucian ideas and beliefs. An example is that Confucianism states lower-ranked officials must obey higher-ranked officials and his constitution stated that the emperor was the most important person in the population.
4. When the Fujiwara clan gained control, they changed the central government in many ways. Some of the changes were that they got rid of all private ownership of land, they established a new tax system, and took a census. All of these changes eventually led to more power in the central government.
5. The Fujiwara clan wanted to give more power to the central government because if they gave power to the clans they might try to take over or rebel. By giving more power to the central government, the Fujiwara clan could use that power to stabilize the clans and other citizens.
